The Monmouth County Correctional Institution was placed on lock down Wednesday night as officials responded to reports of a potential hazardous material spill, said Cynthia Scott, spokesperson for the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.

Official received reports of a hazardous spill at approximately 8 p.m. that ultimately proved unfounded, according to Scott.

“There was not a hazardous situation,” she said. “There were no injuries, no reported illnesses, no one was taken to the hospital.”

As a precautionary measure, the jail temporarily did not accept new inmates and underwent a lockdown as part of its standard operating procedure, Scott said.

Details about what prompted the hazardous materials report or how the jail specifically investigated the report could not be made available to protect the facility’s security, she said.
