Mary Sherlach, CT School Shooting Victim, Looked Ahead to Next Stage of Life

Sherlach was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, the site of a deadly shooting rampage on Friday.

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ -- Mary Sherlach looked forward to spending more time on Owasco Lake during her retirement.

She and her husband, Bill, owned a cabin along the Finger Lakes in upstate New York.

Mary Sherlach was one year away from retirement.

But on Friday morning, her life ended in the second most deadly school shooting in American history.

Sherlach, 56, was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, where a gunman opened fire, killing 26 people, including 20 children. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also killed his mother, who was a teacher at the school, according to reports. He died in the rampage at the school, bringing the death toll to 28.

Sherlach, who lived in Trumbull, CT, had worked at the school for more than 20 years, said her son-in-law, Eric Schwartz, a freelance writer who covers high school sports for Patch in South Jersey.

Schwartz said by telephone Friday night that he and his wife, Maura, first learned of the shootings Friday morning after receiving a panicked phone call from Maura's sister, Katy.

"She was saying, 'Turn on the news, turn on the news,'" Eric Schwartz recalled.

At first, the couple was hopeful when a report indicated that only one person at the school had been shot, in the foot. But the news quickly turned grim.

Broadcast reports confirmed that the school's principal and psychologist had been killed in the shootings.

"It was a really helpless feeling," recalled Eric Schwartz, 28. "For about an hour, you try to say, 'They got it wrong, they got it wrong.'"

Eric and Maura Schwartz immediately drove to Connecticut from their home in Deptford, NJ.

"I still don't think anyone's fully grasped it," Eric Schwartz said from the Sherlach family's home Friday night. "It still doesn't feel real. It's hard to wrap your head around it."

The family was still waiting for more details about the shooting that took Mary Sherlach's life, he said.

'She wanted to help'

Mary Sherlach enjoyed her work at Sandy Hook, especially when she could get through to a struggling student.

"She wanted to help kids get over their problems and go on to be successful," Eric Schwartz said.

Mary Sherlach was an avid Miami Dolphins fan, and she could easily get riled up during a game, especially when her team wasn't performing well, her son-in-law recalled. He took good-natured ribbing from her for being a Buffalo Bills fan.

"She was very sharp and she had a very nice sense of humor," Eric Schwartz said. "She was opinionated, but in a good way."

Now, Eric Schwartz said, Mary Sherlach's family is left to ponder all the what-ifs.

"It’s not fair that she never gets to hold a grandchild. She went from getting up and going to work like any other day, to ... gone."

(Editor's note: An earlier version of this story spelled Katy Sherlach's first name incorrectly.)

However, a coward came in and cut her life short. I send my condolences to her family and most of all to her husband who will never have her to share their golden years with….

The liberal press will rarely refer to the shooter as a "cwoard". Remember how Michael Moore and Bill Maher referred to the 9-11 terrorists as "freedom fighters"?

A coward? He was Mentally ill and a very very sick person. It's not cowardliness, he lost absolute control of who he was and went full blown psychotic. You try dealing with a mental illness when it is not be medicated or managed properly.

Pat Mackie - Who cares if he was mentally ill he committed this heinous act and yes his illness probably was not managed properly ... but if he needed and out he should have just blown his own brains out and those children would be in school today.

The reporting on this story has been terrible. Today, it's reported his mom was not a teacher, never worked at the school, but MAY have once volunteered. The shooter's name was wrong, and at one point, his father was reported dead. The breakneck race to be 'first' with the news makes a mockery of the process.

The media is one of the major problems we have as a society. You are right, the coverage about this horrible crime against humanity has been terrible. Why? The money hungry media has a thurst to be first. The State Police have tried to restrain the flow of info until the facts are all in. We need to embrace the victims and forget about the news coverage until the authorities do their job. God Bless the families that lost loved ones. I can never understand the pain they are enduring.

Here is the same observation I give after hundreds of years of you asking. Why do humans kill each other? They do because they have forgotten. Forgotten who they really are. I tell you this...again I tell you this... as I have told you many times before when you repeatedly kill each other. You and I are ONE. We are all one. There is enough for everyone, abit like a well stocked kitchen. The tragedy you seek answers for lies in fear. Fear you are not. That's why the pain you feel is so intense. Love is what you are. Love is all you can ever be. So re-member to be love again. If it's all too much, simply stop everything, be still with your thoughts, and remember you are only LOVE. Anthony Podosky

When we hear of these mass, no reasoned tragedies it is not about people forgetting to respect and "be love." There are some crazy people out there. Whether chemically imbalanced genetically, illegal drug induced, or some sad mix of nature/nurture/media/video/society's acceptance, tolerance and demand to integrate the imbalanced fully - crazy is crazy and evil is evil and when either one takes over a person they aren't making choices.

That was lovely. Thank you. Disregard the haters. They will never get it. I always felt loved and special. I grew up in an abusive and dysfunctional family. I always felt there was something, someone who loved me. Something far beyond what I was living. I felt special. It took a long time to be "happy" and not fearful. To be grateful and never perpetuate what I grew up in. Again, Thank you for sharing. I get it.

In trying to come to terms with yesterday's horrible evil, I keep going back to the school shooting aftermath at Nickel Mines, in a nearby Amish Community here in Pa.

What they did in addition to bearing the weight of their own losses...they visited the wife of the shooter. They brought her meals and embraced her. They prayed with her and for her. I will never forget that...it was among their first reactions. My heart breaks for all affected and all should be included in our prayers.

In addition, they pled for privacy, both immediately and in the aftermath as they buried their own and took care of their survivors. We all need to respect that and give this community their space and privacy as we grieve with and for them.
...
Finally, to start anew, they tore down the old schoolhouse...and built a new one nearby, done by the residents of the Amish community. While no doubt the Amish one-room schoolhouse can be built in less time, I don’t know how any parent, child or teacher could ever go back to that building in Shady Brook.

I would think that other nearby schools, both within and outside of the district, will take on the students and teachers of Shady Brook until such time as a new facility can be planned for and arranged. In addition to prayers, this may be where we can help them rebuild.

I don’t know, just posting my own thoughts and what I observed from the Amish community.

I really wish people and the media would give these families time to grieve. I live in Lancaster County, and I really wish the families in Conn. could get the same amount of privacy the Amish did. I really hope their community steps up like the Amish community did and help them. The media needs to just go away until the families have come to grips with what happened and can talk about it... IF they want to!

Steve, the shunning is perfectly biblical. It is only done with members of the community who knowingly have committed an offense and have not repented. I don't think we can go so far as to require religious communities to accept people who don't accept their rules and beliefs.

Right now I don't care where his mother worked, or his father, I don't care about the little details that are coming out of the media, Does it really matter at this point? He did his deed, he's dead. Who cares about the motive? there is no one to prosecute, its a senseless tragedy. My thoughts now are with the families who lost their babies. I pray for peace and closure for them.

Right on. LUCK was an HBO production about Horse Racing; great script, Dustin Hoffman staring; common to horse riding everywhere, a few horses sustained injuries and the nut wing of the "animal advocacies" shut it down. Next up, Boardwalk Empire, Frank Buscemi, started out with authenticity of the period of Atlantic City, but then it got "spiked" with senseless brutality and violence; one scene a "thug" actor brought to the cast sprayed a deputy of the Sheriff with gasoline from a pump and then threw a match at him; in a following segment, the body of the man who was having an affair with the main character was shipped to her at the home of her husband in a crate; and this was followed by a "beach" round-up where one poor soul was buried in sand to his neck, and the same "thug" took a shovel and whacked off his head. So where do these sickos come from; homemade; Hollywood! And the issues of NEW NORMAL; Hollywood!

Julie, Timothy McVeigh killed more people with fertilizer. Muslims killed more on 9/11 with box cutters. If someone wants to kill, one or many, they will find a way. Think of what you could do with a car, if you really wanted to. Should we ban cars, fertilizer, or box cutters? No, we need to help people before things like this happen or we need to give guns to the good guys so they can stop the lunatics.

And blaming Hollywood is asinine. My kids don't watch those movies or play those violent games. I decide what is shown in my home, not Hollywood. If society would stop buying this garbage, Hollywood would have no choice but to make something different.

Please use some common sense. Don't let others think and decide for you!

Barney: you're quite vicious against everyone who doesn't think like you. Now you're claiming disarming President Obama's voters (all 63.7 million of them) could stop 'black on black' crime - as you put it). I SO hate to disillusion you, but people who self-identified as black in the last Census only came to 42 million nation-wide, and that included ALL of the children (whom those with any commonsense know can't vote). I'd guess the kids would number at least 2/3? So likely l/3 of that 42 million (at a stretch) might possibly be voters? Subtract those who don't vote for any reason (age, illness) - and the number is far lower. So just how do you account for the fact that this President won re-election with the highest margin of ANY PRESIDENT in his 2nd term since FDR? Let's look further. Stark reality: I'm distinctly Caucasian, am a proud President Obama voter and don't own a gun. Can't disarm those who don't carry in the first place, can you? And no, I'm NOT broke, poor, 'on the dole' (as you lot seem to believe) but am educated, fairly well off and taking a clear stance against those know-nothings who made women's issues their business while making ridiculous and decidedly ill-informed comments about how women's bodies work vis-a-vis rape and incest. WOMEN, both young and older (and those who love them), said 'enough' to the likes of Akin, Ryan, Walsh, Limbaugh and their candidate, Romney.

And this child shooter/murderer--was WHITE as all the worst ones are, not black!

@Sadly: What we've become is a whole lot smarter about bullying. This beautiful and compassionate School Psychologist had worked AT this school for 20 years. So don't assume that this is a 'new' thing in our society. Children have always had problems with bullies. it just took education and intelligence for society to recognize that there WAS a need for someone to be on staff at schools to help children who had difficulties. As a small kid ~I~ was extremely shy and constantly picked on/harassed by others. I somehow managed to make myself invisible enough to get by, but it did leave scars. I grew up to be a WHOLE lot stronger--and to have deep empathy for others who might walk in the shoes I did as a child, but not everyone is so lucky. Bullied children today have committed suicide when it gets overwhelming. Perhaps a compassionate person such as Mary could have saved me from years of heartache? There IS a need for the work she did, and others continue to do. Would you truly prefer to go back to the days when a Romney could get away with torturing a fellow classmate and get away with treating it as a 'childhood prank' with no repercussions? I don't think so.

School Psychology is about crunching stats to determine whether a student falls within one of the 13 federal disability categories listed in the IDEA and requires special education services. Rarely do we get the chance to counsel or assist children with behavioral/emotional issues. And if her county is anything like the counties I have worked in, she was only there one or two days a week and had other assignments as well. We have lost a person who is highly trained and really cares about kids. Someone said earlier this will happen again and again... They're correct. Don't lose sight of the fact that guns don't kill people - people kill people - like it or not - this is a truth. The parents or brother of this fellow cannot be held responsible either.

Since Adam ended his own life - he cannot be held responsible either. The entire event and it's not just the parents and spouses of those slain who will suffer through this... It is the friends and neighbors and community at large - along with the rest of the lookers on - most of the latter who just like tougue wagging and will move on to the next disaster.

One NEVER heals from this. A degree of acceptance eventually; recognition of what's lost; coping...

Dead is dead - gone is gone... So very sorry...

Bradford DeVine, what an idiotic statement! If you bothered to know anything at all about the NRA you'd know they fully support laws keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and other mentally incompetent people. It is made up of millions of law abiding people who are fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters whose hearts ache for the families of the victims of this senseless tragedy. It's true, this monster used a gun to carry out this horrible, evil deed, but I doubt the families of the 22 Chinese school kids killed yesterday by another monster with a KNIFE feel any better knowing that at least their loved ones weren't killed with a gun. Right now, more than ever these children need familiarity. They need the things they were working on to be right there. To displace all these children and build another school does not seem the right answer to me. Sadly, reality must be faced head on. This will never be fully recovered from.

I obviously do not know the incredible person who was killed, but I’m sure her work at the school and her actions as a friend to many people will never be forgotten. I have never been one to comment on much in the media, but the horrific tragedy of this incident will and should never be forgotten. My heart and warm thoughts go out to Mary’s family, especially at this time of year where love and kindness should be the order of the day. As a US Marine, I have always done my duty, but that duty was to help and protect people who could not protect themselves. In my view, Mary Sherlach died a hero, and she will live forever in our thoughts and minds. To the family of Mary, what can I say? She sounded like a beautiful and warm person who enjoyed helping children. I believe she is still working with them now next to the lord. We will all see her again, I promise!

@jullia elliott: people who USE guns kill people WITH THEM! True, he 'could have' used knives...and would have hardly likely to have been able to massacre 26 people as easily, but we won't know that because he had GUNS and obviously more than sufficient ammunition--and tiny childrens' bodies cannot survive the impact of those bullets. IF we can't regulate guns because of the proliferation of illegal guns, then we sure CAN regulate ammunition. Let's start there!

by barney and dave's logic i should have gone on a 5 state killing spree after watching natural born killers or pulp fiction. the answer is to do away with assault rifles and as of now 40 % of all legally purchased guns are bought without any background check. the movie theatre shooter bought thousands of rounds of ammo as well as a 100 round drum simply with a credit card online. sorry folks but your hobby has cost the lives of too many innocent kids. now its time to end it

Absolutely dead on, Frank! They blame it on everything except where it belongs: on the shooter himself AND his ability to obtain guns and unlimited rounds of ammunition--regardless of how he (and those before him) obtained them.

LONG past time to end it. If not now, when? With you on that, all the way.

The Mayors against Guns have a petition: it behooves those of us who agree, to sign it...let's get this done: they're BI-PARTISAN and all across the Country, so Barney can't claim that it's 'liberal', 'black', or 'Obama', especially since the petition is addressed TO The President.
Here's the statement they issued after this latest Connecticut massacre: http://www.enewspf.com/opinion/39165-statements-of-mayors-against-illegal-guns-co-chairs-on-newton-connecticut-shooting.html

and here's the reference to its origins: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayors_Against_Illegal_Guns

I'm SERIOUSLY curious as to what any of these pro-NRA and gun people would say had any one of these tiny kids been their own children or grandchildren? Obviously none of them were so they don't truly comprehend the horror.

@shelbi carpenter: I don't see the gun control issue as political at all, and if not now, when? Should babies be next? Perhaps 100 in a hospital nursery because the next lunatic wants to outdo THIS one? When do we say 'enough' and realize the Brady Bill (strongly supported by Nancy Reagan and her family after her husband was gunned down) is a good idea even while it's being COMPLETELY IGNORED by all Republicans despite Jim Brady's horrific brain injuries--and he was one of them!? When DO we stop allowing the NRA to spend fortunes on lobbyists to keep any discussion of sane gun control from ever coming to the floor of the Senate? Angry and pissed-off people wielding guns filled with bullets kill people! It's that simple--and they need to be stopped. So restrict the sale of ammunition. Perfect solution and an idea whose time has long since come.

@Scotty, if gun control worked, it would be a worthy discussion. But gun control doesn't work. Gun Laws only affect the law abiding citizen.

@Mike Leach: I'm sorry to have to inform you that the 22 Chinese kids you cite as having been 'killed with a knife' weren't. I realize that doesn't suit your agenda to not have them murdered, but thankfully NO ONE DIED in that attack, which again proves the point about the iver-the-top lethality of guns vis-a-vis knives. A knife-wielding assailant has a much more likely chance at being stopped with someone with ANY kind of stick or baseball bat--who's willing to step up, compared to someone with an automatic firing off round after round. You can't stop a bullet! I repeat: NO ONE DIED in that Chinese attack, do you comprehend this? Now retract your previous nonsensical post. Those kids in China were injured and I'm sure it was traumatic for them--but they're alive and none have life-threatening injuries as of the last report, something the parents and families of the victims in Connecticut would give ANYTHING to be experiencing right now.

Nope. Because Bill Maher NEVER said anything of the kind. It's a completely false 'fact' which too many people with reading comprehension difficulties (and clearly hearing problems too) decided he 'must have said' when he had a discussion on his show with Dinesh D'Souza after 9-11. Then it was sent around the internet as if it was 'truth'. UNTRUE! Kindly do a modicum of research first before continuing to promote this bs, especially about such a volatile subject. If over 500 of the Mayors across the US have joined together in a bi-partisan manner to BEG the President to 'do something' this time because they've finally and irrevocably had ENOUGH!, it has ZERO to do with a whacko conspiracy theory. @Barney: Personally? I think that you're a rabble-rouser, a shill for the NRA and a know-nothing (and those are the printable things).

Especially since most Democrats are not those owning the multiple guns, thousands of rounds of ammo OR those committing the majority of school shootings...especially gunning down innocent kids in classrooms as just happened.

Horrible attempt to try to deflect away from the issue of the terrible murders of these innocent wee ones in their own classroom, as well as their teachers and counselor. I've read your other post when you made it about black people and our President.
Kindly quit this. It's really unseemly in the face of the overwhelming grief these families are experiencing.

As a Country we NEED to protect our children--no matter what it takes. This discussion is long overdue--something the NRA has spent tons of money to stall and prevent. Most of us agree on this point. The only ones who seem to find fault are those who insist they have a 'right' to own and use semi or full-on automatic weapons and be able to own thousands of rounds of ammunition. What's wrong with owning a couple of regular guns for protection or having a reasonable amount of ammunition?

Our children deserve better. While people like you build a wall across Arizona and panic if you see a brown skin, the rest of us don't believe the 2nd Amendment gives you the right to own enough ammunition to blow up a neighbourhood if your house catches on fire.

This event and other events that have occurred as well as MANY other issues in our society have a common thread: We might consider that taking more time trying to study how much ANGER, and the inability of many in our society to place a more appropriate thought process in place when responding to life's events precipitated these events. With the burden of anger not in control of the process, reactions to our social interactions will be more productive. Effective communication cannot be achieved when the burden of feelings overwhelm the observations and constructive use of fact to make choices. This being said, the comments made regarding the proper identification and care of those among us who need help is primary to the solution. Gun control may be effective; but, as suggested, the limits of damaging people's lives, injuring and killing goes beyond guns. Perhaps a more realistic effort may be a social conscience regarding issues of anger and more productive efforts in our society: Media, education and leadership focused on issues of anger.

NEWTOWN CT RESIDENTS YOU HAVE THE POWER ===> Re Open the state mental hospital too and don't demand people be suicidal to get in. let every parent or guardian have the ability to have every child evaluated for as long as needed. Stop giving them meds to leave but have them prove they don't need meds to get out.

Back in the 60's and 70's we wayward or weird kids were put in state mental hospitals very easy and checked out for sometimes months at a time and well i was one of them and it saved me. Today kids have to try suicide before they get put in and then are quickly pushed out with drugs to take. When i was there we had to prove we didn't need drugs to be able to get out.. Todays its big pharma pushing drugs and parents have no way to force the kids to admit they are depressed etc so this crazy stuff happens. Insurance companies need to pay but actually the STATES NEED TO REOPEN THE MENTAL HOSPITALS and stop with the private hospitals.. its CHEAPER TOO to hospitalize people with problems verse them ending up in prisons making private prison industry rich.. PLEASE REGISTER AT SITE + SIGN AND SPREAD AROUND ASAP. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/reopen-all-closed-state-mental-hospitals-dont-demand-people-be-suicidal-commitment/3CBlV26k the money saved by removing drug users from prisons and putting them in state hospitals will cover the cost to reopen them..

Sharon, I get what you mean because there ARE so many of these mass murderers who do want to be known for having the 'biggest count' or 'the deadliest' shooting. The language stokes their fantasies. Several of the previous school shooters talked about it in videos left behind and a few of those who didn't die during boasted about their body count afterwards. Serial murderers have a similar mindset. Berkowitz and Bundy were two such.

The incredible idea that certain people here have that opening Mental Asylums will somehow prevent these kinds of shootings is so ludicrous, it leaves me aghast. Most of these people walked among us looking and behaving reasonably normally until they executed their plans. As I'm sure you are aware (based on your post), it's the notoriety and FAME they see themselves as achieving in an otherwise nondescript life which seems to lie behind most of these horrendous acts...with some, their way of hitting out at people they have a personal rage against, and nothing remotely to do with 'Hollywood'. This time, choosing such small children seemed a clear enough sign that it was to ramp up the 'look what 'I' did' reaction... and to cause the MOST pain possible. To play into it is giving him (even posthumously), exactly what he wanted.

This makes me ill. What happened is a horrible tragedy carried out by a sick individual. I am sick of what I have read from peoples posts on the internet its hard to even answer with a civil word at this point.I read "Don't allow any guns" & "If they prayed in school this wouldn't happen" & "Kids today" & "violence in movies, TV, games & music" It's all crap! A sick person is a sick person. Violence has always been in entertainment .The majority of people don't go out and kill people.I even grew up having a gun in my house & guess what? I never shot anyone! So many people are using this to push their political or religious agendas that it's nauseating.I don't feel we should have prayer in schools. I do think we need stricter gun laws but not to take away all guns. So don't jump on me as a religious hater or gun slinging super fanatic. I happen to believe in God which normally I wouldn't say, mostly because its none of your business. I don't have a gun as a personal choice, not that I am against them.I love all those shows on HBO & the violence is authentic to the time. The racing show shut down by HBO because SEVERAL HORSES DIED! It was voluntary & I give them credit because they didn't think of money first. This country needs to address mental illness. We need to destigmatize it and fund it so people get the help they need. Hey Hermy,

Let's start at the root of greed and evil - Hollywood.

It is time to realize the USA has always had guns, but never saw the amount of mass killings the way we saw this year.

It's the kids!

It's what they learned on TV, the movies, and the games.

It's not the guns.

Curb the violence on TV.

It might be too late but this country will have a civil war if they think Obama is going to abolish the 2nd amendement.

The Socialist can only go so far.

The real problem is all of us. We all know someone in our own town who is either mental or not themselves for one reason or another. In most cases when something like this happens people familiar with the shooter will tell stories about the person saying they exhibited odd behaviour, always or recently. So, why are we not doing something about that? This kids mother is to blame. She had an odd son but had guns where he could access them?? Truth be known, she's probably been a lot of the problem.
Siince we all know or have known a local nut (many on SSI) why are we not looking at them as potential dangers? Because we don't want to offend anyone?
I for one have known people around town over the years who are mentaly challenged and everyone knows it but, some say he or she is harmless others avoid them. Would you have them over for dinner or show them your gun collection, let them hang out with your kids?
So, report these nuts and have them looked at by some authority before something bad happens.

If she was a good Psychiatrist..she should have intervene with this guy and made arrangements for him to get proper treatment, knowing something was terribly wrong with this kid....all was in denial and did not get him proper treatment despite of their roles as a School Psychiatrist and Parent....

She should have worked with his parents and got him proper treatment...and she did not! because he was still attended a "Normal" school with his mental and physical disabilities...he DID NOT NEED TO ATTEND A NORMAL SCHOOL IFHE WAS MENTALLY DISTURB

If he has a rare medical condition and can not feel pain...then you know THAT NEED to be address..

@Barb: not quite. I know it makes for a pithy sound bite, but since they COULDN'T USE GUNS ON BOARD they had to devise cutting weapons (ergo box cutters which are concealable) to attack the crews who either didn't fight back, or if they did were killed. Shock value kept the others in line. A bullet fired IN an aircraft would have punctured the fuselage and disintegrated the plane in mid-air which would completely defeat their purpose, so of course they needed up close and personal weapons. The prevailing thought on Airlines (back then) was that no hijacker or terrorist would kill the pilots since they'd need them to fly the planes. No one ever thought they'd train their own pilots to crash the planes into buildings. The Airlines also did not keep the cockpits locked (all changed since 9-11). Passengers back then were also far less inclined to get involved as they are now. Now we know it's either that or die--so passengers have taken down many out-of-control people. Boxcutter wielding assailants can be disarmed by unarmed people willing to risk injury. Anything, even a book or jacket or towel wrapped around an arm can be used to protect oneself from the blade. Sheer numbers can overwhelm an assailant. NOT SO with a gun. And in truth? The real 'weapons' of 9-11 were the planes themselves. THEY (and the jet fuel) are what did all the damage. So let's at least keep the facts and the truth straight for purposes of accuracy.

Scotty, let me just assure you that a stray bullet merely puncturing the fuselage would not have "disintegrated" the aircraft. Having made my living in aviation, I find your uniformed analysis laughable. Especially considering the note made on getting facts in order. Another fact remains: hijackers used box cutters and that led to the murder of nearly 3000. You missed the point. That being, they will always find a way.

@Kaitlyn--you're right. And she's being justifiably hailed as a hero, along with the principal of the school for running TOWARDS the assailant. Two very courageous and unarmed women putting themselves between their charges and danger. That takes bravery of a kind which takes my breath away--and still leaves me in tears days later. So many women killed from very young to middle-aged including the murderer's own mother. So many young lives, many more girls than boys murdered. There's a theme here but the overall feeling I get is the terror that must have been overwhelming, yet intense bravery in the face of it.

Mary Sherlack was an astonishing woman as were the others who died with her. Much of our frustration is because we don't want more incredible women like her to be destroyed far too soon when we can and HAVE TO do something to stop this carnage. My heart is just aching for her family as well as for all of the others. I cannot imagine going through this.

We cannot expect government to fix the problem by going after Stallone movies (1st Amendment) or legal firearms (2nd Amendment). Government can’t effectively do what it’s allowed to do now. Perhaps we should redirect our anger to a different system. The system that lets homicidal psychologically challenged (legit disease, demonic possession, genetically predisposed, but in all cases those who “seem a bit off”) yet get to enjoy the same freedoms as the rest. Imagine “morality testing” every year in school, using instruments developed by and vetted through the AMA, etc. tested with the same vigor as math and English skills, for example:
If you found a bag full of money, should you,
A) Give it to the authorities.
B) Use it to buy gifts for those you love.
C) Give it to charity.
D) Keep it to buy things for yourself.

If someone bullies you in school, you should,
A) Report the incident to your guidance counselor.
B) Confront the bully.
C) Wait for the opportunity to attack the bully in secret.
D) Punish the school for allowing bullies to act without consequences.

Scores get tabulated and psychologists assess results. Anyone scoring in X percentile or lower is then required to attend special classes or get state-funded treatment. Those who score below Y get institutionalized.

State Hospitals are barely making it and then not without private donations and volunteerism. The mental health system is broken. Suggest we think along those lines and no other.

Minster why must you ALWAYS bring lies and slander into any discussion. First off, NOBODY of note is talikng about banning movies. Secondly, the 2nd amendment was written well before the invention of semi and automatic weapons and was put in place because there was a real threat on England coming back (as they did in 1812). In the modern era the US is under no threat of foreign invasion. None. Zero. If you want to "protect" the nation, join the Army National Guard where issued an M 16 (that is kept by your unit when you aren't on active duty and only given out when needed or for rifle qualification). Otherwise, one semi auto is more than enough to "protect" yourself.

As for your facist mandatory psychological testing, that is something Hitler actually did in the 1930-40s and then use the results to jail, kill, and/or "sterilize" anyone who didn't agree with the "party morals". Thanks for giving us an insight into the way many right wing nuts actually think.

@1 The 2nd Amendment was put in place for the people to protect themsleves from tyranny, not just from England but from our own government. The Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard etc. are supposed to protect the nation.

Our right as individuals to bear arms is in order for us to protect ourselves. It is a defense - you look as a gun as an offense saying it is only meant to kill. You frame of mind is incorrect especially for someone who owns a gun.

A reason for owning more than one semi-automatic is it takes less time to reload when you are defending your life and property.

We absolutely DO have to go after the semi-automatic rapid fire guns? They should be BANNED and those bullets that are designed to destroy tissue when they enter the body should be banned. We also do have to address the mental health issue because we do seem to have a significant population of mentally disturbed people. We should give aid, counseling and therapy to children with severe mental health problems. But here's the thing, the same people who will not budge on any sensible gun laws don't want to have universal health care.

That said, people should not be allowed to have more than one semi auto as there is no good reason for it. There should also be restrictions of the amount of ammo one can purchase. If we had a national registery that all dealers and sporting goods store had real time access to, it would be clear when someone was trying to stockpile arms and ammo and send a red flag to law enforcement.

You are correct, we may as well Ban cars, spoons, fast food restaurants, tobacco, doctors performing surgeries, and pools. As I researched United States list of preventable deaths. Those are the top and yes among those are also firearms... the funny thing about it is that guns are near the bottom.

You can't ban stupid and your can't ban evil. Banning does not stop anything. Look at Drugs on the street. somebody mentioned prostitution. I'm sure there are other banned things out there. Criminals will find a way to find the banned things and use them.

Best thing you can do is EDUCATE. You can't label anything to anyone because that's discrimination.

And as for your universal healthcare, I was in the Armed forces, it was terrible dealing with doctors who don't give a crap about you because they "work too hard to get paid nothing." Move to Canada if you don't like it here.

When the gun manufacturers all over the world are shut down, all guns are destroyed and the knowledge to create guns are gone, I'll gladly get rid of mine.

As more comes out about the mother of the shooter, I really have to question her judgement. All three of the guns that Adam Lanza carried into Sandy Hook Elementary were owned and registered by his mother — a pair of handguns and a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, his primary weapon. Reports said Sunday that Nancy Lanza visited shooting ranges several times and that her son also visited an area range. It is also pretty clear she was well aware that her son was mentally unstable, changing his school multiple times, even trying to home school him at one point; yet she thought it was a good idea to stock the house full of semi automatic weapons that the kid could get to?

This is a clear example of how irresponsible gun ownership can allow these kinds of things to happen. First off, why would she encourage a mentally ill/unstable kid to use guns to begin with? Secondly, why in the world did she need three semi autos? Wouldn't one be enough for "protection"? Finally, were these weapons kept in a locked safe? If not, that is borderline criminal in my opinion.

As a gun owner myself, I think we need some serious changes to the current laws. No one should be allowed more than one semi auto weapon. One 9mm glock is more than enough to "protect" yourself. If you want something more powerful, fine but one only! Hunters can have all the long rifles they want. Those don't hold a lot of ammo and are pretty hard to hide under your shirt if you are a nut on a rampage.

The fact is you will NEVER get a total gun ban into law in the US so why not try to take steps to make gun ownership more transparent and safer. Limiting people to one semi auto is a start. Having all guns and ammo in a real time national database (buyer data entered within 24 hours of purchase) would also help but whining that all guns should be banned or that there should be no gun laws will get us no where.

@1
I have a semi automatic shotgun for turkey hunting. A Glock with a 13 round magazine that I use for Personal Defense, but sometimes that is too big to carry, depending on what I am wearing that day. So I have a smaller semi-auto pistol that is less powerful, and less likely to stop an attacker. I also have a semi auto .22LR (holds 16 .22LR and would hold even more .22 shorts) that I use for shooting cans of diet soda left over from family parties, tin cans, and I also use it to teach my interested friends how to safely shoot a gun (although I am not a certified instructor). So tell me why should I only be allowed to keep one of those? They all have legitimate purposes. How does owning more then one semi-auto gun turn someone into a murderer? I mean I could carry 2 revolvers just as easily as I could carry 2 semi-automatics. And while this is an extreme example there are professional shooters who are able to get 12 rounds off with a 6 shot revolver (so that does include a reload) in less then 3 seconds so the amount of lead down range argument is kinda negated with that too. Or do we limit how many bad guys we get to protect ourselves from per incident? But why punish the many responsible owners of these type weapons who simply enjoy shooting them at the range? There are a ton more of them then are the sickos who commit these crimes. And AGAIN, the law does nothing to deter the criminal.

What is your idea of a "regular pistol". I'm assuming you are referring to a revolver style hand gun that only holds 6-8 bullets. One could make the argument that is enough to "defend" yourself (and revolvers are actually more reliable as 9 mm tend to jam), it's a matter of personal taste. I think you could make a better argument to get rid of the assualt weapons (AK 47s, Bushmasters, M-16s) which I would actually consider because those weapons can easily be made automatic and hold much more ammo. See if you are willing to compromise, you may get some where. I don't expect the hard core gun nuts here to agree but again, they are also part of the problem. Today NY Times carries and article "In Town At Ease with Its Firearms, Tightening Gun Rules Was Resisted". The irony is that Newton is a town with lots of ranges and shooting which the police chief struggled in vain to control. All that leisurely and "fun" shooting and not one bullet could stop the slaughter. Fun and excitement for gun enthusiasts, death and carnage for the victims. Perhaps those in towns like Middletown (often rated as among the safest) might choose gardening as a hobby. When was the last time a crime was stopped in Middletown by an individual weilding their own semi automatic weapon? I must have missed that story on Patch.

Forget about some sort of total ban. It will NEVER happen and trying to do so is just a waste of time. Instead we need to focus on making our guns laws more transparent and prevent people from massing large stock piles of weapons and ammo.

It is nearly impossible to get a license to carry a gun in NJ due to the liberals that run (as well as rape and pillage) this awful place. If things were done correctly teachers were carrying their MP5s this would have never happened. Thankfully more moderate states in the union are allowing for broader carry laws and stopping liberals from keeping citizens from carrying their guns into schools and malls where there are needed to protect us from all of these people with mental health issues that should be locked up in an asylum rather than main streamed and given two aides in public schools (while using public money that should be spent to educate children that will actually benefit)

Israel figured it out 30 years ago. Teachers carry automatic weapons. This does not happen there.

Because of folks such as yourself, it's near impossible to get a permit to carry anywhere in NJ. That's why there are no stories like the one you elude to.

In fact, because of folks like you, should a person run out of his/her home because they saw a gun crime in progress and, in assisting the victim, shot the perpertrator, they would likely face serious charges and law suits.

What type of gun did Tim McVeigh use to kill all those people? What about the 9/11 terrorists? What if ALL guns were made illegal. Do you think gun crime would go up or go down?

This site seems to be over run but wing nuts from the extreme right and left so there is little to no room for intelligent debate. Luckily in our democracy, the MAJORITY rules so I expect that we will be able to find middle ground to create better gun laws.

Good day and good luck to you.

Abbott schools are for kids with intellectual disabilities? That's a new one.

How did his mother give him access to her guns? If he got them, he stole them (crime #1) and then he used them (crime #2). let's round up all the people with guns who have committed crime #1 before they commit crime #2.

How many murders in chicago last month were committed with legal firearms?

I don't care about semi automatic weapons. The idea that gun laws prevent tragedy is the issue.

Do criminals who commit murder with illegal guns follow the laws?

@1,

My response isn't about being a right winged nut, it is simply me saying don't take my rights away because you think your method is best.

By you calling most people here about being right winged makes me realize that for you everything is either your way or the right winged nut way.

Let me tell you something you will not take my rights away and you will certainly not tell me what I can and cant do. You want to stop these crimes from happening, not dissarm the same people who would stand up for you when all hell breaks lose.

Do yourself a favor and turn in your gun, and if you ever get in trouble call the police, hopefully, they will arive before an armed criminal brutilizes you, stabs you, or shoots you. Good luck. you left winged nut.

What can we ban to prevent rape? Rape is a terrible crime too and should be stopped. 1, what do you recommend?

The process has already begun - we have been overfeeding women for years and making clothing a large and calling it a small and calling girls that look good anorexic or bulemic so soon all the women will be soooo fat no one will rape them anymore.

Assault rifles have to go.... bottom line, if you cant hit your target with 6 rounds in your handgun clip then you shouldnt be handling a gun. Don't bring up the mentally disabled because you have no idea if this particular 20 yr old was or wasnt mentally diabled, for all we know he was off kilter because his parents divorced. This young man was only interested in doing what he did because he knew the power of that weapon, he could spray multiple shots and have an advantage over any normal man holding a handgun, nothing more or less than that. Take that gun out of the picture and I highly doubt he has the nuts to commit this senseless act with your average handgun. He was a coward that I only wish had lived to face what he has done so he could have been dealt a slow agonizing death.

So, what you're saying is, if assault rifles were banned, this wouldn't have happend? I don't think that's the case. IMO, anyone who could experience fear or apprehension, I think, has just enough emotion to NOT shoot a child. This kid was out there.

LB - Assault weapons are banned!! We are all safe now!! Thanks

Does a Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol with a 17 shot clip count as being banned?

Would 17 shots do a lot of damage or do you think we should limit it to 6 shot 38 specials?

So this is where we are in our country. Schools will have to be in perpetual lock down, maybe a police officer will have to be assigned to each school. You will have to be constantly on guard when you go to a movie or mall, even if you have a concealed weapon. Are we living in a war zone? We have domestic terrorists, they are well armed with multiple semi-automatics, hundreds of rounds of super lethal ammo designed to do even more damage than the standard bullet, extra large clips and body armor. Killing masses of people in the shortest period of time has never been easier with these semi-automatics. Will teachers be able to take the kids out for recess? What will happen to that school in Newtown; it's a crime scene for the foreseeable future? Will it be turned into a memorial for the vicitms of this horrific tragedy? As Mike Bloomberg says, we are the only country of the industrialized democracies that has this problem to the degree and intensity and regularity that we do.

That's where the majority of people live. Over 90 % of the population live in metropolitan areas. Also, demographically, people living close to the poverty line tend to see and partake in illegal activities. By the way, the highest proportion of death, by guns, per person, is Mississippi. Yes, the white people. Common denominator-POVERTY

I have a great idea. Let's borrow money and it will fix the problems with guns. It solves all of our other problems now so let's do more of it.

Let's test your liberalism. If the kid was caught and put on trial, would you support the death penalty for him or should we lock him up for 50 years with free cable, health insurance and 3 squares a day and try and turn him into a better member of society?

How many murders in Chicago under Democrat control this year? Answer 437. Most by legal guns I'm sure.

If you choose to commit a crime, we will put you in jail or kill you. The choice is yours.

Bush created 11T of debt? you are insane.

The debt when Slick Willy left office was $5.6 Trillion up 40% over 8 years from GHWB.

Debt today of $16.3 trillion less debt when BHO sworn in $10.6 Trillion. How much is that Mr. Math Wizard?

NJarhead: Sorry, today's my birthday and I really didn't want to deal with the barrage of nonsense, for a while anyway. As far as the guy at the Oregon Mall with the extremely badly written 'may have' affected the outcome of this shooting by his concealed carry? Did you actually READ the article? Here's the story: He, his girlfriend and her baby heard shots, She dropped to the floor with the kid. HE hid behind a pillar and took out his weapon as he watched the gunman strike his rifle a few times (presumably having difficulty reloading). As HE tells it, it seemed a perfect time to get off a shot but then he noticed movement behind the gunman and -prudent kid that he was, opted not to shoot for fear of hitting someone innocent, ran away with the girlfriend and child. The gunman killed himself. WHERE in any of this is there any HINT that he had anything REMOTELY to do with stopping the continued carnage? There's not even a breath of a hint that the shooter saw him! So this one, single solitary guy with a concealed gun on him 'might possibly have gotten off a shot' (if he took it, that is), and THIS single incident is what you use to justify no gun regulation/licensing/stricter id laws? (which is what I'M for, btw)

H'okay.

Sorry, there are better versions of the article you can read if you'd like. Perhaps there aren't more examples because there's less crime in areas that permit carry and conseal? Hmmmm. So this is the only thing I've said that you cherry picked to debate? No surprise there. These crimes are representative of the sick individual, not the tools they use to carry then out with. For every gun crime, there are thousands, that's THOUSANDS, of responsible gun owners. They don't preach about what you "need" in your home and ask that you not do the same to them.

@jarhead--referring back to another of your earlier comments directed at me. I'd commented on someone else making a false statement about both Michael Moore and Bill Maher. I knew for a fact that the statement about what Bill Maher had said was utterly false but did not 'yet' have a link to prove whether or not the claim was inaccurate about Michael Moore. You LEAPED to the conclusion that I was supporting him, insulting the man's weight in the process. First, what on EARTH does a person's weight have to do with his/her intelligence or talent? (If that's a difficult question for you here's the answer: nothing). Secondly, in no way did I say that I 'supported' Mr. Moore. He's made some salient points over the years while other points of his I disagree with. Unlike some here my mind isn't one-track.
