Lautenberg to Retire from Senate After Term Expires
The 89-year-old U.S. senator officially confirmed he will not seek re-election in 2014.
After a nearly 30-year Congressional term, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced Thursday he will not seek office in the 2014 election.
“I will be traveling to my hometown of Paterson tomorrow to announce that I will not seek re-election in 2014," read a brief, one-paragraph statement from Launtenberg's press office.
"While I may not be seeking re-election, there is plenty of work to do before the end of this term and I'm going to keep fighting as hard as ever for the people of New Jersey in the U.S. Senate," his message concluded.
Lautenberg's announcement also promised that he was undergoing "a two-year mission to pass new gun safety laws, protect children from toxic chemicals, and create more opportunities for working families in New Jersey," although in what capacity, he did not report.
In July 2012, Newark Mayor Cory Booker told press that he was "strongly considering the options" at the end of his mayoral term, and that Lautenberg's Senate seat might be among them. Then, in December 2012, he clarified his choice to run for Senate as Gov. Chris Christie rode a strong high of post-Sandy support.
While Congressman Frank Pallone (D-06) hasn't officially announced a campaign for any position this year, insiders told Patch Pallone isn't ruling out a run against Booker for Lautenberg's seat.
"I have peen proud to serve with Senator Lautenberg and even prouder to call him a friend. I look forward to continuing to work together in the coming months to continue to address the issues that are important to him andNew Jersey. Like all New Jerseyans, I am grateful for his service to our state and our nation," Pallone said in a statement.
Christie said that while he and Lautenberg haven't always gotten along, he admires the Senator.
“Frank Lautenberg and I have had our differences through the years, but I’ve always respected him for his tenacity, devotion to the people of New Jersey and his love for and commitment to public service. I will always be grateful for his doggedness in fighting with me and the delegation to ensure congressional passage of an aid package after Hurricane Sandy that is delivering necessary assistance to our residents. I wish him the best in his retirement.”
New Jersey State Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D)—who hasn't announced if he'll run for U.S. Senate, but did decline to pursue the governorship in 2013—released a statement on the news today as well:
Senator Lautenberg has fought tirelessly for the people of New Jersey during his time in the U.S. Senate. Frank is someone who never backed down when it came to the issues that mattered most to our state. I look forward to working with him in the months ahead to continue to advance the priorities that will improve our state’s economy and the lives of New Jersey’s middle-class and working families.
Lautenberg's office also produced a .PDF (see above) that listed the highlights of his career as an elected official, which included his work on public transit, environmental issues and gun control issues in New Jersey and on Capitol Hill. He is the only remaining World War II veteran in the U.S. Senate.

What a self indulgent egomanic "Lautenberg's office also produced a .PDF that listed the highlights of his career" He should be charged with war crimes and deported.

It is about time this useless old man went to pasture. I hope the rest of his life is a miserable as he helped to make things for those of us in NJ. I only wish the worst for this antiquated old fool.

I have a big news flash for you airheads who are knocking Sen. Lautenberg. Elderly equals wisdom, not stupidity. We need more wise people instead of kids. And why are you calling Cory Booker, Obama Jr.? Is it because both are African-American? Just shows your racism. And why shouldn't Sen. Lautenberg issue a file of his accomplishments? Ever hear of an autobiography or is that beyond your scope of reasoning? The bottom line is that the Senator is a Democrat and we all know you RepubliRats still haven't gotten over the fact that you lost the election.

Who said I was talking about booker? You are the racist. Neither booker nor obama are african americans you tool. They are just black. They were not born in africa. You are a real racist. No wonder why you dont use your real name coward. The point is that lautenberg has done nothing but waste the taxpayers money while he should have been in a nursing home. If he did actually do anything someone else would publish a list of his accomplishments. Do you think Ronald Reagan or Bush I or Bush II had to publish a list of his accomplishments!!!! The whole world knows of the accomplishments of these selfless statesmen.

"African-American" does not mean born in Africa. If I have to explain that to you than you have an even bigger problem than I thought. If you weren't referencing Cory Booker, now let's see, who can it be? So not only are you a racist, you're an ageist too. Ronald Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, even while in office, so how could he publish a list of his accomplishments? I'll list his accomplishements for you. He refused to fund Alzheimer's research and he told kids "just say no." Do you ever say that as a kid? So how about you listing the accomplishments of Bush II? Let's see, he took us from a profitable nation to one with a huge deficit, he contributed to the death of 4K Americans, and let's not forget that he violated our Constitution (warrentless wiretapping) and for the first time in our very noble history, allowed Americans to torture others. Anything else? I'll grant you that Bush 1 was a war hero. But Republicans of his ilk no longer exist. Getting back to Lautenbverg who this article was about, it is just your opinion that he wasted money, not my opinion and not the opinion of most others. But you're entitled to an opinion, even if it is baseless.

I guess since you are so old you remember when they were colored and before they made up kawanza? By the way - there is no such thing as ageism. Another made up word. Hope they got your drivers license already you can barely function.

Paulie, the very best thing I can say to you is that you should be ashamed of yourself and on many fronts. I could explain everyone of my statements but I choose not to. Why? You don't even have the mental capacity of a 2-year-old and wouldn't understand a word I said. Also, I don't want to insult the many charming 2-year-olds. Remember this Paulie, you too will get older one day and I hope that those who surround you don't give you one iota of compassion because you have not earned it. Good luck, Sen. Lautenberg. You are a fine man, a great representative for NJ and deserve only the best in your retirement. Hope you don't meet up with any people of the Paulie ilk.

Well, I have a news flash for you. There are a lot of elderly people who are complete dumb asses. I would take rubio in his 40's over a corpse like gautenberg any day. As far as booker goes it is pretty obvious. They are not African Americans. Just shows you are a left-wing dummy. Accomplishments? Please. Wise up gnc or are you one of the wise elders you speak of?

Fed up-
I think it would be a good idea if you discussed your feelings with them about "elderly people who are complete dumb asses." I'll venture to say that they may have a few comments for you including a good swift kick in the butt.

The combination of $en. Lousyberg, $en. Torricelli, $en. $pendendez, former Govs. McGreevey, Codey, and most of all, Jon Corzine have been a deadly combination for NJ business. We are ranked last in the nation for being "business friendly", primarily due to our Byzantine tax codes highlighted by our first in the nation ranking for worst property taxes. The ONLY reason the Dems did not run Lousyberg is because he CANNOT win against Booker!! The "empty suit" Rep. Pallone knows this as well. As a boy, NJ was the "Gold Standard" of the United States when it came to financial stability. Anybody remember AAA bond ratings?

Our Senators and Congressman are ordinary person friendly which is a heck of a lot more important than business friendly. Buisnesses would have ordinary citizens live off pasta or rice 24/7 while they vaction in the Bahamas. Lautenberg could have easily won re-election because unfortunately for folks like you, this is a Democratic state. Governor Christie calls himself a Republican but he is more Democratic than Republican. Why do you think he is so popular?

I think Lautenberg died years ago and they hired Disney to make an Automartronic copy to sit in his seat. You never hear of him doing anything, but that loud mouth Shummer from NY doesn't shut up. And by the way, why did we need to put his name in big letters on the train station in Secaucus? How much did that cost?

Ageism again, so sad. Unfortunately for you, there are more people over 50 in NJ than there are those 18-50. They are Democrats too. And older people vote. And the younger voters who vote are more compassionate about the average person than rich do-nothings.

And I'm one those people over 50. I am also a moderate independent but registered as a democrat. The man is 89 years old and out of touch with reality. He retired once in 2000, but was taken out of moth balls by the Dems 45 days before the election because their candidate Bob Torricelli was facing Federal corruption charges. He was the only choice with a name that could have run on such short notice. He really hasn't done anything in the Senate since 2007. I wonder what his voting record was been since then? and his attendance? What bills has he sponsored? Has he done anything for NJ to help recovery from Sandy? Unlike the Pope, Lautenberg did not recognize is weakness in body and mind if he did he would service before his last term.

I wish Senior Senator Lautenberg well in his remaining years , and may they be many. He may have over-stayed. He overcame poverty, obtained his education via the GI Bill after COMBAT service in Europe, and even in the NJ DEMOCATIC party, he overcame anti-semitic leanings. Cut my man a break..
