After taking a long ride in a convertible with the top down, Alex Hough and Gianna Fischer, seniors at Middletown High School South, settled down in the grass to cram for midterms. This was a half-day at school.

On Jan. 30, 2013  the temperature in this part of the world fleetingly rose to a balmy 66 degrees. Outside was cloudy and breezy, and cooped-up local residents stepped outside to stroll the paths in the stark, leafless beauty of Thompson Park.

Around 3 p.m., mothers in sneakers were power-walking while pushing babies in strollers. Dog owners were meandering the paved paths. Cyclists were whooshing along the loop on Christmas bikes. Two students were laying on a blanket in the grass, shoes off, cramming for midterms.

On Thursday, the weather is forecasted to be cold and windy with a chance of rain, with temperatures only reaching 39 degrees.
