Elite High School Runners Whip Through Holmdel Park

The NJSIAA Meet of Champions was held in Holmdel Park Saturday. The best three teams from each group in the state competed. More than 3,000 people came to cheer on pure athleticism on a perfect day for running.

Junior Jack Baisley (360) finished the race first on the Holmdel team with a time of 16:42. "It was a little slow in the beginning because everyone was at the same pace, but toward the end it broke up," he said.

Volunteer coach Alan McCafferty,, a onetime state champion, and father of the Holmdel Boys Cross Country Coach Sean McCafferty, another former state champion, offered his insight to the Holmdel Hornets.
Holmdel High School Junior Lennon Cooper came in 42d in the race, with a time of 19:32. (She was a wildcard pick and ran solo. The Holmdel Girls team did not qualify.) She said she thought she did "pretty good," adding it was not her best race of the season. Early on, she got "boxed in" at the beginning by other runners.

The temperature was warm and dry, but the air was electric with excitement at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions Saturday, Nov. 19.

The Holmdel High School Boys Cross Country placed 11th in the race, with a time of 1:25:08. The team members were Jack Baisley, Travis Fodor, Dan Barlev, Andrew Tsai, Eric Williams, Jason McMullen and Nick DeMaio.

The HHS Girls team did not qualify, but Lennon Cooper entered the race as a wildcard. She placed 42d in the race.

  • Caroline Kellner (18:20) of West-Windsor-Plainsboro Regional
  • Mackenzie Barry (18:21) of West Morris Mendham Hgh School

Top Three Winning Girls Teams:

Rumson-Fair Haven, Hillsborough, and Mount St. Dominic Academy.

Boys:

Top Three Individual Boys: 

  • Tim Ball (15:31) from Piscataway Twp High School
  • George Kelly (15:37) from Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft
  • Ben Malone (15:40) from Rivervale's Pascack Valley High School

Top Three Winning Boys Teams:

Christian Brothers Academy, Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, Westfield High School
