Update: Man Killed in Parkway Accident Near Exit 117 on Friday Identified

The accident occurred in the express lanes on the Hazlet section of roadway.

New Jersey State Police have identified Luis Delcarpio, 47, of West Orange as the victim of a fatal accident on the southbound express lanes of the Garden State Parkway on Friday.

At 6:58 a.m., one vehicle struck the guide rail at mile 117.9 while traveling in the Parkway express lanes. The driver and a second passenger, identified as Antonio Delcarpio and Alexander Delcarpio, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Bayshore Community Hospital.

The relationship between the three men was unknown.

A mix of snow and rain fell throughout the day on Friday, resulting in slippery road conditions and several accidents.

Is it me, or does it seem like more accidents occur on the Eatontown (exit 105) to Keyport (exit 117) stretch of the parkway than anywhere else?

I live in the area... its because that stretch is essentially over a mountain. The same range that you drive-up, for example, in the Highlands on your way to Sandy Hook. You notice it around 117 as you slightly rise and then drop around Holmdel near the Arts Center. Northbound is worse because the incline is higher... so anytime the weather is bad, especially with snow and ice the incline and the curve create a bad combo.

I drive that way everyday to and from work, i have not seen any accidents and im very surprised by this because people drive it like its a racetrack,i dont know how many times ive looked in my rearview mirror to seen a car speeding up behind me and getting ready to ram me and then switch lanes at the very last second and cut other drivers off not to mention people speeding to no end

Yes, Debra, it is like a racetrack. I have noticed this from the Asbury toll area going north. People leave that toll area and drive like its the Indy 500. And people tailgate me in the far right lane, go the left and then cut me off to get off at a nearby exit, what a mentality to drive a car or pickup truck!

Jar,you are correct..It seems like that is the most accident prone area..I see people driving way to fast and taking those exits WAY WAY too fast as well.

My boss was talking to me today and what he noticed is that when he hit the area for 109 he noticed a drop in temp in his car and when he got to south amboy area it went back up. He thought that it maybe the way the land is and it could have a valley affect which would changed the driving conditions when it rains or snows.

I noticed that too actually. 36 degrees before. 31 on the pkwy and 38 after. Hmmm.

I agree with Christine. I see accidents there very often, and people are driving way to fast, taking the exits too fast, and not using any courtesy letting signaling drivers change lanes to pass or exit. Distracted drivers texting or on the phone, and sleepy drivers are also endangering all of us.

At the 117 exit area alone there has been at least 3 deaths in the last few months :-(

The GSP was never designed for cars to average 85MPH. Nor can a modern American car survive almost any accident at that rate of speed. Simple physical laws will not allow it. SLOW DOWN. 30,000 people per year die in US car accidents, almost 800 in NJ!!!!!

The average NJ driver thinks they can drive safely at 85MPH. Yet the common focus is on older drivers who hog up the fast lane. Listen to radio station 101.5 in the afternoon. They blame the majority of accidents on the 'left lane" drivers and ignore the speeding maniacs who risk lives to arrive 5 minutes earlier at their destination.

The parkway is treacherous. It's a blessing that there aren't more fatalities considering people driving so recklessly each and every morning. More police presence please, and heavy fines for speeders.

Everyone is in a Damm hurry whether its on the Parkway or your local streets. I love when I am driving and person behind me MUST pass me so he can take a right turn 100 ft in front of me..

They need to change the word from accident to intentional..Causing an accident because you are a lousy inconsiderate driver aint no accident..Its INTENTIONAL..People are dying because of Rotten drivers..Many people would be alive if they SLOW DOWN, use turn signals..

The only thing the turn signals do is let people know what you are doing so that they can cut you off. I never use them. The parkway is rated for speeds in excess of 100MPH. Try driving between 98 and 80 - there is a death per day.

Paul, you are correct when you say Turn signals only let people know what you are doing..By you not using them, you may contribute to accidents..I get pissed off when I have my blinker on to change lanes and start to change lanes but that person in front of me changes lane without a signal ..If that person had his signal on I wouldnt of changed lanes..There is more risk of accidents when people change lanes..Using signals helps everyone around them know what your intention are..Accident risks do increase when you Don't use turn signals

Fred, I actually thought you were going to say that when you put your signal on the jerk in the lane you're going into speeds up from 5 car lengths to 1 in that time and them beeps/flashes you for "cutting him off." I can't stand that.

Wait a second! paul heyman- I see in a post above, you "never use turn signals"? It's people like you that cause accidents and drive insurance rates up. Based on your ignorance of the rules of the road, maybe you should be retested for your drivers license.

Listen flintstone look it up in the drivers manual before you further embarrass yourself. The people like you that are obsessed with getting back in the middle lane and then slowing down and cutting people off especially if god forbid you see a po po mobile behind you are the ones causing accidents. Well you and the soccer moms in the mini vans texting their boyfriends.

The problem is idiots like Paul driving down the parkway, changing lanes without signalling, and not keeping to the right. Unless you're passing someone, there's no reason to be in the left lane on the parkway AND it's illegal.

Jeff you are a complete idiot. It is not illegal to drive on the parkway in the left lane even if you are the only car on the road, Simple. If you can read look it up. If not keep living in your fantasy world.

"New Jersey already has one of the nation’s toughest “keep-right” laws. Motorists must stay out of the left lane except to pass, and trucks and buses are forbidden to travel in the far-left lane on highways with three or more lanes in one direction."

Thats just a news article. The only failure to keep right law in NJ is on a one way road. Cite the statute.

Statute was cited, heyman (N.J.S.A. 39:4-88). So tell us, what's "embarrASSment" feel like? Face it. You don't have a clue.

NJarhead

11:04 am on Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Yes, there is a statue for what you're claiming (keep to the far right of the lane), but there is also a law that states you must keep right and pass left only. The articleS are discussing that law being enforced more harshly.

The laws of New Jersey require motorists to keep to the right, except when
passing. Motorists must drive on the right half of the roadway unless driving on a
one-way street. Motorists must drive a vehicle as close as possible to the righthand
edge or curb of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another
vehicle. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-82)

@Paul.
What you're referring to:
"The laws of New Jersey require motorists to keep to the right, except when passing. Motorists must drive on the right half of the roadway unless driving on a one-way street. Motorists must drive a vehicle as close as possible to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-82) "

What the rest of us are referring to:

"On a multi-lane roadway, motorists must drive in the lane nearest to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway when the lane is available for travel, except when overtaking another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-88) "

There is very little enforcement on the GSP
Remember there used to be a bunch of speed traps every 1.1 miles. 119.9,118.8,117.7,116.6. People in express still slow down southbound after 114 for that paved median area but rarely see a radar cop there either.
