All State Residents Can Now Apply for Individual FEMA Assistance

Relief available for temporary housing, repairs, loans, etc.

Individuals in every New Jersey county are now eligible to apply for federal disaster relief, the governor's office announced Tuesday.

All residents and businesses can now apply for Individual Assistance through FEMA and the Small Business Administration. The state had already been approved for Public Assistance, which is available to state and local governments as well as nonprofits.

Individual Assistance relief allows residents to apply for aid including temporary housing, repair, Disaster Unemployment Assistance and Small Business Administration loans.

The governor's office advises all residents who suffered damage to apply with FEMA, even if they have their own insurance.

Register by calling 800-621-3362 or 800-462-7585 for those with hearing or speech impairments. Residents also can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or via a Web-enabled mobile device by visiting http://m.fema.gov/ and following the link to "apply online for federal assistance."

Does this apply to lost salary due to lack of power? Our office was closed so we lost several days of pay.

Emergency assistance will cover days of unemployment beyond any person vacation or sick time pay that you have available. If you were sitting on a week of vacation pay, you can not claim emergency unemployment.

what about the food that I had to throw out from lack of power due to the hurricane? Is that considered disaster relief?

Why not call and find out? I know that if you have homeowners it should cover the food but of course then you have to meet your deductible.

That is an excellent question. I lost plenty of food because of this and now will have trouble replacing it

No, it considered stupidity for failing to plan ahead. Some people lost everything and you're whining about food? Count your blessings and stick a cork in it!

no, there is no one that will refund you for lost food due to lack of power, sadly. I had the same problem last year with Irene, so I know first hand. Additionally FEMA has been quite clear that they do not reimburse. If you are hungry, or in need of food - you'll have to find one of the temp shelters or food locations. Good luck.

Unless you have a specific endorsement on your insurance policy to cover that, your HO insurance will most likely not cover for replacing food. And, even if you have the endorsement, it's subject to your policy deductible (which, for most people, can range from $250-$1,000).

In almost all cases, Fema will only give assistance for a primary residence and not for a vacation or second home.

Renters can apply as for FEMA as well. However if I'm not mistaken FEMA will not replace electronic appliances only clothing and furniture. Good luck!

FEMA is designed to work on top of your homeowner's insurance. Some people seem to have the attitude that any storm damage means that the government will reimburse you for everything including the food in your refrigerator.

That said, if you don't have flood insurance, then FEMA comes into play.

That tree that fell on your neighbors property is technically their problem to deal with. Legally they are responsible for anything on their property even if the tree was in your yard to begin with.

Big U is right. In NJ at least the law is that if a tree that is on your property falls and does any damage what so ever it is the insurance of the homeowner of where the tree LANDs responsibilty. I just went through this with my insurance. I was shocked. You can offer to clean it up or pay for removal but legally you don't have too however remember you are going to be living next door to these folks for a while yet.

heard back today from my claim that I filled.. I was not asking for any damage to the house, or the Hot water heater that got damaged ( my husband can fix that himself) we had asked for help for his 1998 truck that was flooded. Unable to drive & salt water getting to the electrical system... though it may not be much to someone , we own it, its ours, it registered & insured & our insurance doesn't cover flood. We where cold to call fema went threw all the registering process, Now we are basically being told that because we had 2 cars ... the other one we used to leave in, we were highly suggested to leave the area we live in a block from the river) ... so was I suppose to stay ??? ( let both cars flood out??... let my family be in danger??) they will not help us getting that replaced. We understand in may not be worth much ( Blue book 3,500-2.900) but as it sits in the flooded soaked driveway its worth nothing ... I GET they want to get people in homes NO problem making us wait to get other people necessities, But We had a Truck that worked before the storm & Now doesn't ... Thanks for nothing .

People have lost their homes and sometimes all of their possessions.

You are complaining about a 2nd vehicle that is a 14 year old truck?

If I worked for FEMA, I'd fine you for abusing our time.

Why?? I pay my taxes into the program. I pay for home & car insurance that does cover flooding, I had a working vehicle prior to the storm, But because of the hurricane I no longer have use of it... I TOTALLY understand that others with nothing should take precedence over this... However my choice was to stay in a unsafe environment & leave both cars to be flooded OR leave to where my family could be safe...in 18 years living here we have had small floods & water has NEVER come up that high. I had personal property that was lost, I pay into the system.. NOT sure why I can can not be reimbursed for the value of the Truck that was needed in out family of 6.. & BTW We where TOLD to file a claim with Fema, it was not our idea, ... Iam beginning to wonder who is getting the reward for how many claims are filed.. starting to hear a lot of people that where told to file only to be denied.

exactly, we do not have the funds to replace it, it was not worth much But my husband works hard every day to support our family & will do what ever he can to help anyone else.. Its not easy with only 1 income since ( laid off 10 months ago from my job) coming into our home so what we have we can not afford to replace. & makes it difficult for me to look for work with only 1 car. I don't want anyone to think That Iam not blessed for what we have, & I know people have it worse, But the bottom line is we had something & now lost because of the hurricane We pay for our home ins. we pay for our car ins. we pay our taxes .. we are not asking for a handout we are only asking for what we lost to be replaced ...& also we had home damage that we COULD have made a claim with instead my husband fixed it on his own because he could... but salt water getting into a electric system is not something he can fix..

Dear "A Resident", you have no idea how much that car may have meant to that woman. This is not a contest; the person who lost the most doesn't win anything. Anyone who lost anything - whether you think it's important or not - is suffering. Try being kind instead of being insulting. Her getting her truck replaced has nothing to do with you. You're the one who needs to get a clue.

But in our 30 years of working paying taxing on our home & fedl tax I believe we have far existed 3,000 that we have paid into, only fair to give back what we have lost ( & paid into) NOT asking for anything More then that ... & we where TOLD to file a claim....

Here is mayors Kelaher's email adress TKelaher@tomsrivertownship.com. Start pounding him with emails why and when is Ortley Beach getting in. With the warm days the mold is spreading faster and we need to do something before we all lose our homes. And where is his support, I haven't seen or heard from him once since Sandy hit us. I have a feeling he doesn't care about Ortley Beach, just cares about our tax dollars. Something has to happen now, it will be 2 weeks and still no word on Ortley Beach. nah, because of people judging what is important to us &what isn't What is worth replacing & what isn't, Iam sure some full time residents are in Ortley but its primarily Seasonal 2nd homes ... regardless how much some one worked to afford to have that& regardless of how much taxes they are paying ( I bet a lot if they own 2 homes & working) It was something they had before the storm, & now its gone, Just like the post about the person with the Truck. its not right that people that most likely are paying a large potion of the FEMA funding are getting Zero help

Just wondering how FEMA determines who gets help for what. understandable people without homes should come 1st, however heard on 101.5 yesterday a man that is getting addl funds on this relief check for putting up 2 pieces on wood in his deck & nonstaining .... When someone second home or second car's are not getting considered for help.... these people earned the money to have 2 cars or 2 homes, they should have back what they lost... NOT for someone to re-stain a deck... I heard however they are allow people to take a loan out. REALLY, If someone OWNS their homes or OWNS there second car they Didn't have a load before why should they now?

I think the people that pay the most amount of Taxes & Federal tax supporting this program should be the 1st to get help.
Except in almost all the cases I have heard either they are screwed bcz the where responsible & had flood insurance OR FEMA was not willing to help them bcz they had a " second home" or a second car... THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE PAYING FOR THE FEMA PROGRAM...& are being denied its not right

Fema will give you sheet rock and money for immediate lodging (or put you on a list of hotels they have booked). The guy on the radio was most likely lying as that would be covered under his homeowners insurance and I am sure if it was not he wouldn't have gotten money that quickly.
IF your insurance doesn't cover certain expenses FEMA will offer you a low interest load (under 2%) that will obviously have to be paid back.
They aren't going to be handing out "free" checks for $150,000 to rebuild people's house.
Also, if any of these homes are not your primary residence you will get nothing,

So if people are are working hard( most likely paying high fedl tax) paying taxes on 2 homes, paying out the nose for everything,Its very possible these people MAY have a home left, But how many of them lost the place they worked at?? Now having mortgages on 2 homes will have to sell the home that they have just to live, OR they can just start the Obama life style, Work less get more ..... sounds like a plan to me 1 out of every15 Americans cant be wrong !
( that was before the storm)

FEMA is not an entitlement like Social Security. It is just government assistance. Personal insurance is first. They don't pick and choose. Everyone plays by the same rules. If someone else got help and you didn't, then their personal circumstances were different. You didn't "pay into FEMA". There is no FEMA deduction on your paycheck. Everyone contributes through federal taxes. It is not the government's responsibility to repay you for weather related losses. If you get anything, you're lucky

most ppl pay into SS except the disabled or ppl with disabilities which nobody in their right mind would want
so excuse me if I dont agree SS is an entitlement
turn off fox news

Actually quite true. Bungaloes built in the 50s. Small lots. Walkaround neighborhood.. Many summer rentals there. Member at the surf club for many years. Breezy was a party town (still is and I hope still will be) where working folks came to their summer homes at the end of the day. Agreed that some homes have been built as year rounds, more so on the bay side, but some on the ocean side.. But this is about FEMA and the fact that some are getting FEMA relief on their summer homes. I don't understand why they can get it in NY, but not NJ.
