Aberdeen PD Charges Union Beach Man with Aggravated Assault, Arson

Police say he attempted to light the victim on fire

Aberdeen Township Police charged a Union Beach man with aggravated assault, arson and weapons offenses following a domestic violence incident on Netherwood Drive Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to a domestic violence call involving a knife at about 2:20 p.m. Jan. 12. When they arrived on the scene the suspect, later identified as David Anthony, 36, had already fled the scene, according to Aberdeen Chief of Police John Powers. Anthony was located a few blocks away but fled from the officers, police say. He was then taken into custody on Orchard Street, according to Powers.

Police say that Anthony became involved in a dispute with his girlfriend, pushed and choked her, then held a knife to her throat. Anthony then sprayed hairspray on the victim and tried to ignite it with a lighter.

Anthony was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated arson, terroristic threats, two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.

Total bail on those charges was $90,000 no 10% option. Anthony was also wanted on contempt of court warrants out of Aberdeen municipal court and Monmouth County Superior Court. He was committed to the Monmouth County Correctional Institute.

Investigating officers were P.O. Young, P.O. Michael Plant, Sgt. Theodore Sigismondi, Det. Henry Chevalier, and Det. Sgt. Michael O’Dwyer.
